Save Big with Australia’s $500 Rebate Program: Here’s What You Need to Know

The Queensland Government has unveiled an exciting initiative to support sustainable transportation options. From September 23, 2024, residents will be eligible for rebates on select e-bikes and e-scooters as part of the state’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Strategy. This program aims to encourage the adoption of environmentally friendly transport solutions, reduce emissions, and alleviate traffic congestion. The announcement follows the conclusion of Queensland’s electric vehicle rebate program earlier in the month.

Eligible participants can receive up to $500 for approved e-bikes and $200 for e-scooters. However, with a funding pool of $1 million allocated to this initiative, those interested are encouraged to act quickly as the program operates on a first-come, first-served basis.

Key Details of the E-Mobility Rebate Program

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the rebate, residents must meet the following conditions:

  • Purchases must occur on or after September 23, 2024. Retroactive rebates for earlier purchases are not available.
  • Applicants must be individual Queensland residents aged 18 or older. Businesses and sole traders are not eligible.
  • Purchases must be made through registered retailers, either from physical stores in Queensland or Australian online retailers with a valid Australian Business Number (ABN).

Criteria for E-Bikes

Rebates for electric bicycles are subject to specific standards:

  • The e-bike must be classified as an Electrically Power-Assisted Cycle (EPAC) with a maximum continuous power of 250 watts.
  • The motor’s power output should automatically decrease once the bike reaches 6 km/h and cut off entirely at 25 km/h.

Criteria for E-Scooters

Similarly, e-scooters must meet the following criteria to qualify:

  • They must be designed for single-person use.
  • The motor must automatically cease functioning at speeds of 25 km/h or higher.

Program Limitations and Additional Information

A few restrictions apply to ensure fair access:

  • Individuals are limited to one rebate each.
  • A household can claim up to three rebates, allowing families to participate while maintaining equitable distribution.
  • While the initial funding was $1 million, an additional $1 million has been added to accommodate expected demand.

Rebates in Other Australian States and Territories

Tasmania

Tasmania was the pioneer in offering rebates for e-mobility devices, providing:

  • Up to 12% of the purchase price as a rebate.
  • A maximum rebate of $500 for standard e-bikes and $1,000 for cargo e-bikes.

South Australia

In South Australia, local councils have introduced rebate programs:

  • Residents in the City of Holdfast Bay, including suburbs like Glenelg, Brighton, Seacliff, and Hove, can access a $200 rebate for standard e-bikes and regular cargo bikes.
  • Electric cargo bikes are eligible for a $300 rebate.

This initiative underscores the growing national focus on sustainable transportation and positions Queensland as a leader in promoting greener, more accessible mobility solutions.
