The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) has revealed the cost of living adjustment (COLA) for seniors receiving benefits in 2025. In contrast to the 3.2% increase in 2024, the COLA for 2025 has been lowered to 2.5%. This reduction reflects a drop in inflation throughout 2024.
Starting in January 2025, around 68 million Social Security beneficiaries will receive their adjusted payments, while 7.5 million individuals on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will see the increase begin on December 31, 2024.
For retirees, the average monthly benefit in 2024 was approximately $1,927. With the 2.5% COLA adjustment, this amount will rise to about $1,976 per month in 2025. Married couples receiving Social Security will see their monthly benefits increase to $3,089.
When Will You Receive Your COLA Increase?
The date for receiving the COLA increase depends on the recipient’s birth month. Here’s a breakdown:
- Those born between the 1st and 10th of their birth month will receive their payment on January 8.
- Recipients born between the 11th and 20th will get their COLA increase on January 15.
- For those born between the 21st and 31st, the payment will arrive on January 22.
Additionally, some individuals may qualify for both Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which provides additional support for low-income seniors and disabled individuals.
